Stat students: we did pretty well on the exams. We'll check them tomorrow. In the meantime, do you know what is wrong with each of the following statements? Just put yes or no, don't correct them...
1. The probablility that Stanford wins the Rose Bowl is -.2.
2. There is a 1.36 probability that Stanford will not win the Rose Bowl.
3. The probability that a tack lands point down is .34, and probability that a tack rolled twice and lands point down both times is .68.
Also, why aren't disjoint also independent events?

1. YES
2. YES
3. YES
Disjoint events are not independent because they are "mutually exclusive". Basically, knowing that one event occurs tells us that the other event cannot occur.
1. YES
2. YES
3. YES
Disjointed events are not independent because if we one event will occur then we know another will not.
Now I could say Yes,Yes, and Yes just because Shawn and Amanda did; however what if I didn't? Would that increase or decrease my probability of being right? Hmmm...
1.) YES
2.) YES
3.) YES
(Thats what "I" think I promise!)
I will use an example:
!Making Pancakes!
Let use one step like mixing the batter and 1/2cup of water (disjoint). If I put in "1 cup" of water and the batter than it would totally mess up everything and affect the next step (dependent).
Yes, yes, and yes again.
If events are disjoint, they cannot be independent--if we know that if one thing happens, we know that another can't. For example..assuming I don't wander off, once I get somewhere on time, I can't also be late. So when I arrive on time, my probability of being late drops to zero. If one outcome influences the probability of another, it isn't independent.
yes!
yes!!
yes!!!
disjoint events are not independent events because we know that if one event DOES occur, a different event will NOT occur.
por ejemplo: if i leave school to take my driving test on tuesday morning, the the probababability of attending statistics class on that tuesday decreases to zero.
~no, i am not taking the test on tuesday, i WILL be in class 8P ~
